Emiliano Di Cavalcanti

Brazil (1897—1976)
After dropping out from law school, Di Cavalcanti started his artistic career as illustrator, cartoonist and painter. He founded the Semana de Arte, together with Oswald and Mario De Andrade, Guilherme de Almeida and others. in 1923 he travelled to Paris, where he met Picasso, Braque, Léger and Matisse. In 1929 he formed a new group, SPAM (Sociedade Pró-Arter Moderna). He returned to Paris but three years later he left to escape the Nazi occupation. He continued to work in Brazil on female body and mulatto figures, whom fascinated him and became recurring subjects of his work.
